This comedy from George Farquhar follows Aimwell and Archer, two fashionable beauxs, who have fallen on hard times and plan to woo young heiresses and steal their fortunes. In its twenty-fifth anniversary year, the theatre boasted that this season would represent the full spectrum of Irish theatre: ‘From Farquhar to Friel’.
This was a daring reframing of our Northern Irish theatre history, as the Irish heritage of Derry-born Farquhar was not widely known. Indeed, it was on the London stage that he found fame, writing the bawdy Restoration Comedy which came to define that society in the early years of the eighteenth century.
