The Flats

March 1971

The Flats by John Boyd, was written in 1969 and produced by the Lyric in 1971. The play follows the Catholic working class Donnellan Family, living in a block of Belfast flats being patrolled by the British Army. Featured here is a copy of the programme signed by the playwright.

This production was designed by the indomitable Mary O'Malley under the formidable pseudonym of Mary McCracken. Playwright John Boyd helped shape the Lyric's output as literary advisor, and beyond the staging of plays, he contributed to the cultural life of the city as regular editor of the Lyric's cultural and critical magazine Threshold, which ran between 1958 and 1990
