Written by Sean O'Casey in 1928 and set during the First World War, The Silver Tassie follows young footballing hero Harry Heegan as he deals with the horrors of war. The play was rejected by The Abbey Theatre, rupturing relations between the theatre and the playwright.
With a huge cast of 22, the Lyric mounted a production of the infamous play in 1971. The Lyric had always maintained good relations with O'Casey, producing 22 of his works over the last 50 years and the playwright noteably made the first donation to the Lyric Theatre Building Fund in 1959 stating "I wish your adventure every success and hope it will become a torch of leadership throughout Ulster... I enclose a guinea and with it my sincere good wishes - it is all I can afford and a pagan prayer or two for your good and fine intentions."
