Two years earlier MacAnna's production of Brendan Behan's Borstal Boy had been nominated for a Tony Award, and later this year MacAnna would start his first of two tenures as Artistic Director of the Abbey (1972-79 and 1984-85). The play has proved a perennial favourite of political theatre and would be produced again in 2004 by the Lyric Studio, directed by Alison McCrudden.
